Novel Orwell 1984 Essay The individual is doomed to a desire for power, in a world where power is unattainable. In 1949 Eric Arthur Blair published a novel called 1984, under his pseudonym George Orwell. This is a book that has many underlying themes to it, and among the themes is the power struggle that exists between the characters and the government. Orwell reiterates the notion about a power struggle in the plot, the settings, and the characters. Absolute power corrupts absolutely; this is the unfailing truth that is proven once and again in this novel. Near the beginning of the novel Orwell introduces Winston Smith, the main character of his book. Winston works in the Ministry of Truth altering documents from the past. Winston does not share the views of the other Outer Party members, but due to the fear instilled in him he does not share his feelings with anyone else he works with. Instead he keeps his opinions to himself, and tries to fit in only enough to not arouse suspicion. Near the beginning Winston also runs into a woman, named Julia, that he dislikes, but later falls in love with. Julia also does not agree with the Big Brother government, but she goes out of her way to fit into the mold of the ideal Party member. Just looking at these two characters shows us that power is at the root of all people, but that is also one of the things that Big Brother is working to eliminate. By breaking people, and showing them that power is unattainable, Big Brother hopes to bring the party members to a point where they will no longer fight against the party s power, but will rather accept it. Winston and Julie represent what happens to the few, who do not accept what is told them and try to rebel against the current power. They strive after power, not realizing that it is the hatred of the absolute power that set them into rebellion in the first place. They rebel in as many things as they can, all the while wondering in what way they can help themselves, their ambition is self serving. For instance when Winston starts volunteering at the munitions plant, he only does so to his own benefit, so he can have a deeper cover as the ideal citizen. Defying the rules about sex only for the purpose of defying the government, not for love or lust, just defiance, shows us how very much Winston and Julia are power hungry. Power hungry for their own power, how much power they can assume they only way they know how, defiance of Big Brother. It doesn t matter to them how the defiance is achieved, they only know that they do not like what the party does, so they want to rebel. They both long to join the Brotherhood, a fictitious group of rebels founded by Samuel Goldstein, which is their only hope of survival to relish power in their plight against Big Brother. Although in the end Winston loses this battle to the party because of the Party s power, controlling the past, the present and in some degrees the future. Controlling the minds of its members, because as O Brien tells Winston, the only truth exists in the mind. And the Party controls the mind, so in truth they control the truth. It is also stated in the book that whoever controls the present controls that past. This is true because the only things we have to remind us of the past are documents that are in the present, but when the documents are controlled then the past is controlled along with it. In the end Winston s fears of becoming an unperson. They had succeeded in ascertaining their power by wiping out most of the people that existed when they first came into power. The older generation had mostly been wiped out in the great purges of the fifties and sixties, and the few who survived had long ago been terrified into complete intellectual surrender. † (Orwell, pg. 74), this shows us how power was the driving force for the Party as it purged great numbers of people so it could run the country as it would, all those lives were in sacrifice for their struggle for power. Then after they had achieved their power they had the means to enforce it, The Thought Police would get just the same (Orwell, p. 21). This shows us how Winston s mind worked, he knew that the Thought Police would get him eventually because the Government had proven itself over the past 40 or so years. It had proven to the people that there was no beating the system, no matter how hard you tried you couldn t beat the system. Every day more and more people became unpersons. Big Brother had the power to make the people believe anything they wanted to. For all they knew Oceania could have been a self contained state, and the rest of the world could have been free, but they would have been none the wiser. Just toys in a game being played with and discarded at will being pushed around and controlled by a master hand from above. The plot shows us how power is the driving force behind all of the characters decisions by leading us through Winston s struggle against his own mind, and then into his struggle with O Brien and the Ministry of Love. In the end we see that, He loved Big Brother (Orwell, p 311), and that his struggle for power was ultimately lost at the hands of the greater power, wanting more power: INGSOC, the newspeak word for English Socialism. Big Brother had won the battle for Winston s mind. They had broken down what little humanity remained in him. He was merely a shell of what he used to be, now he was filled with only what Big Brother wanted him to be. He had no feelings, no conscience, he merely reflected the ideal party member, in thought and in deed. The setting of the society, and the totalitarian government shows the dangers of what may happen when the hunger for power is satisfied. From the terror they represent in the proles minds, to the fear that they instill in the party members, Big Brother is proof that Absolute Power, Corrupts Absolutely. In a world where power is unattainable, it becomes the sole desire for man. Although power is constantly used as a magnet for those who are not yet strong enough to resist it, it is kept for those who are perfect in the eyes of the government. Winston and Julia are merely two examples of the many people trying to thwart a system of government that is all-powerful, all-knowing. The control of the past also adds to Big Brother s power. The plot shows the hunger for power by revolving every aspect of the novel around power. The thought police as a means of the government s controlling of the general population, represents the means to gain power, while the everyday person is what is sacrificed for power. Power hunger is indeed resident within each individual.

Tennis ennis is a game which opposing players-one or two on each side-use rackets to hit a ball back and forth over a net. The game is played on a flat surface called a court. Each player tries to score points by hitting the ball so that the opposing player or players cannot return it over the net and inside the court. Tennis may be played indoors or outdoors. If two people play, the game is called singles. If four people play, it is called doubles. In most singles and doubles matches, men play men and women play women. In mixed doubles, a man and woman play on each side. The Court is a rectangle divided into halves by a net stretched across the middle. The net measures 3 feet high at the center and 3 1/2 feet high at the side posts that support it. The court is 78 feet long. The singles court measures 27 feet wide. The doubles court is 4 1/2 feet wider on each side. The most popular surfaces for outdoor courts are asphalt, clay, and concrete. Tennis Balls are hollow. They are made of rubber and covered with a felt fabric woven of Dacron, nylon, and wool. A tennis ball must have a diameter of more than 2 1/2 inches but less than 2 5/8 inches. To be sure, a considerable portion of Kipling's works were written in celebration and support of Imperial expansion, but it is short-sighted to simply label him as an Imperial propagandist or apologist. Two of his most oft-condemned poems, Recessional and The White Man's Burden, actually were used by both sides of the colonial issue at the time.1 A reading of Recessional, taken in the context of the prevailing attitudes of the time, seems to indicate that it is a piece about hubris rather than a promotion of the Empire. This book was written in 1959 but its referencing to human behaviour is still very much relevant to today’s life style. Human behaviour patterns have been written about by many individuals over the years, why we do the things we do or how long we have been undertaking these behaviours. Is there any relevance to the patterns in our behaviour? It would seem there definitely appears to be. As a society, to influence how another person perceives who we are. We give appearances and refinements of someone we want people to see, yet not particularly who we truly are. Goffman describes this as a performance, a play that we put on to give a good first impression. This play could become a nightmare, if we do not keep it under control. It can be difficult to play the part of someone you are not, for the reason that it can rebound on you. It is better to persist with who you are, and not reveal all of yourself in the beginning, like a good story. To present who we are, we should start at the foundation, begin with presenting an opening act. This act should be near to true life, the person you would like to be known as. Currently a person of importance gives the impression that they know what they are doing, example your doctor. If they were a person who, on first meeting gave the impression that they were unsure, confused and unconfident, would you go back to them? No, perhaps not. Even when they are having a bad day your doctor will always appear to be in control, so that we feel more at ease. When we first meet new people we try to acquire information about them, it is then how the person delivers this information, that we base our assumptions. People give information verbally and non-verbally by expressions, movements, gestures and other presumably unintentional communications, like a slight smile. Our brain takes all this information into consideration then makes a personal judgment based on the material it collects. There is so much information for us to collect and make our decision on, that we sometimes need a second meeting to be able to make a correct judgement on a particular person we have meet. Goffman concludes that his own assumptions are made upon a face-to-face interaction and the result of an encounter, the performance that is given to each particular participant and their performance as a basic point of reference. The medical model: is presented as viewing disability as a problem of the person, directly caused by disease, trauma, or other health condition which therefore requires sustained medical care provided in the form of individual treatment by professionals. In the medical model, management of the disability is aimed at a â€Å"cure,† or the individual’s adjustment and behavioral change that would lead to an â€Å"almost-cure† or effective cure. In the medical model, medical care is viewed as the main issue.The Social Model : The social model of disability sees the issue of â€Å"disability† as a socially created problem and a matter of the full integration of individuals into society. In this model, disability is not an attribute of an individual, but rather a complex collection of conditions, many of which are created by the social environment. Hence, the management of the problem requires social action and is the collective responsibility of society at larg e to make the environmental modifications necessary for the full participation of people with disabilities in all areas of social life.The issue is both cultural and ideological, requiring individual, community, and large-scale social change. From this perspective, equal access for someone with an impairment/disability is a human rights issue of major concern. The Moral Model: Refers to the attitude that people are morally responsible for their own disability. As a service we undertook with our service users the task of going out in our local town and seeing firsthand what barriers people with physical/sensory disabilities faced. We identified several venues, e. g. library, bank, park and local indoor market and we set out to identify what barriers, if any our service users faced trying to access the facilities.The social barriers were evident immediately. The library had stairs with no lift, so it was inaccessible for wheelchair users, the park had extremely uneven footpaths, which was extremely dangerous for people with walking aids and the bank had an electronic door, but only stayed open for 3 seconds so the individual I had accompanied there in a wheelchair would have actually got stuck in the door had I not been there to press the door again quickly to reopen it.As a service, we supported our service users in writing letters to the organisations explaining the difficulties disabled people faced trying to access their buildings and our service users told us they felt empowered and liberated having done that. As a service, which is named ‘Our Choice’ that is exactly what it is, the service users choice in what they want to do with their time with us, how they want to do it and with whom.My role is to ensure I am properly trained to work with a range of person centred planning tools and implement them tools in a person centred way. In this essay I will consider the above statement and go through all the points of question related to it. I will then make an informed decision in the conclusion, as to whether or not I regard the statement as correct. To begin with it is important that we consider the relationship between Biff and his father, Willy. Both Willy's dreaming and his cruelty suggest that Willy lives in a world of his own. He seems to have unrealistic dreams of his own and his family's importance and in Biffs case he is puzzled as to why Biff is working on a farm and this leads to a great deal of conflict. Willy's views are liable to sudden change. One minute he says that Biff is ‘a lazy bum' and then he says that he ‘is not lazy'. It is clear that Biff is sensitive and caring and loves his family deeply, but at the end all he can do is to be cruel and force everyone to face the truth. This is why he reveals that he has been to prison for theft. Biff goes on to try and make Willy face reality in his terms. At one point he states quite clearly that it was his father who ‘blew me so full of hot air I could never stand taking orders from anybody' . It is the devastating statement that Biff and Willy are both ‘a dime a dozen' or very ordinary, that shatters Willy's dreams. In having an affair Willy betrays Biff's ideal image of his father to the extent that Biff labels him a ‘fake' and makes him decide not to re sit his exams in the summer in an attempt to spite his father for what he has done. Biff shows sensitivity towards his mother by not revealing the details of the affair to her, despite him having known it since he was seventeen. Willy's reason for the affair – that he is ‘lonely' and has no-one to talk to- is shown to be untrue, yet there is truth in the fact that he cannot communicate with his own family. Willy's love for his sons is heartfelt, but his ambitions for Biff seem to have little relation to his son's needs and desires. His neglect springs directly from his dreams. As a salesman Willy lives by his ability to engage in people and make them believe in him, and this carries over into Willy's private life. He even tells lies to his wife about the sales he has made to appear to be earning a great deal of money. Biff's claim his father ‘never knew who he was' and that he himself does suggests that he will move away from his father's model for success. Willy was inconsistent with his parenting. For a start he favoured Biff over Happy. Willy also tries to live through his sons by encouraging them to try and become the perfect salesman that he has always tried to be. As a result of Willy's dream Biff has lost confidence, according to happy, and Willy is partly responsible for disparaging his farm work However this could also be down to the fact that Biff doesn't know ‘what I'm supposed to want'. This could be one reason why Willy favours Biff over Happy because Happy oozes in confidence whereas Biff does not. Another reason why he favours Biff is because Biff is the only person who really knows about his father's affair, so Willy is trying to keep Biff happy. Willy's favouring of Biff over Happy, makes Happy constantly try to be like his father in order to please him. However, Willy seems concerned at the way Happy treats women, so he advises him ‘the world is like and oyster, but you don't crack it open on a mattress! The phrase means that you have to work to succeed, but also implies that going to bed with people is not a means to economic and social success. Happy insists that he is going to show that and that he is going to ‘win it' for Willy. Yet as Willy has lied to Happy about what he has been earning, Happy in unaware that competitiveness is ultimately fruitless, though it sustains the capitalist system. Willy's late brother Ben is seen by Willy as the personification of the American Dream. He started out with nothing and became rich through Diamond mines. From the way in which Willy speaks about Ben it is clear that he is in admiration of him, saying ‘That man was a genius, that man was success incarnate' Willy regrets not going to Alaska with Ben commenting, ‘What a mistake! He begged me to go. ‘ A note of despair enters when Willy says ‘The woods are burning'. This poetic metaphor recalls both the elm trees which Willy loved and the jungle where Ben made his fortune. The implication seems to be that the very land of opportunity itself is going up in smoke. However there is an ambiguity as to whether or not Ben is directly responsible for this. If he is then it would seem that Willy's admiration for his late brother would be somewhat misplaced. Bernard has accepted the realities of school, life and he tries to encourage Biff to â€Å"start studyin' maths†. Indeed it is likely that Biff would have joined Bernard if Willy had not told Biff that Bernard is ‘not well liked' so therefore will not succeed in the business world. However Willy is proved wrong as Bernard becomes a successful lawyer with impressive credentials. He is to be applauded for his down to earth approach to life because he has disregarded what Willy has said about him and done things his own way and been rewarded with success. Bernard and Biff's relationship parallels Charley and Willy's. If Bernard is the character who tries to make Biff face the reality of school life, then Charley is the one who tries to make Willy face the reality of working life. Charley is Willy's only friend and he indulges him. He offers him a job, only to have it thrown back into his face by an angry Willy. Charley can see that Willy could change his life if he wanted to: ‘I don't see no sense in it. You don't have to go on this way'. In reality the relationship between Charley and Willy is not that close. Charley sees Willy's one major floor is that he is always boasting about what might have happened and dislikes the fact that he constantly has to mention the things that he will not eventually accomplish. Linda and Willy have a strong marriage. Linda is a staunch defender of everything that Willy stands for yet she is also acutely aware of his nature: ‘I know he's not easy to get along with – nobody knows him better than me-†¦ Willy regularly confides his fears and weaknesses in Linda, such as when he tells Linda that he can see that other men who say fewer words -like charley- are better salesmen. Linda's reassurance shows how fragile Willy's self-respect is. He appears to depend on her support to survive and when she says that he is ‘idolized' by his sons we as the audience know that this is not true, yet without this reassuring statement, Willy might not be able to face the next day. Biff's dream is to continue to work on the farm away from the competitive Capitalist society in the city. Willy's dream on the other hand is to fulfil the American dream of going from rags to riches. I believe that in the end Willy decided to commit suicide because he decided that it was time for him to quit as he had failed in his attempt to fulfil the American dream. I believe that he may have decided to take, and act upon, the advice given to him by Bernard earlier in the play. Here Bernard is philosophical about success and advises Willy that giving up may sometimes be the best option. If you can't walk away he remarks, ‘that's when it's tough'. Willy may have decided that in his current predicament the best option would be to take the advice of walking away, and Willy may have taken this to mean committing suicide. Based on the analysis above I believe that it would be fair to say that Willy's dreams, were not necessarily wrong, but unrealistic and almost impossible for him to achieve because the Loman family were naturally suited to life in the countryside. So, Biff's opinion of his father is somewhat indecisive. I believe that over ambition and expectation proved to be Willy's downfall. Unfortunately Willy ended life believing that he had failed, when really he had not. He had just made the last mortgage payments on the house, and both of his sons were content in life. Willy attempted to keep to a set of moral and respectable principles in business, something which ultimately cost him dear. He did not believe in exploitation, rather he believed in common courtesy and decency. Had he not held close these principles then he would most likely have come closer to fulfilling the American dream. So in all it would seem that Willy was a tragic victim of society who was destroyed by the evils of capitalist society.

The ultimate goal of health care is to treat, prevent or to intervene for those who are ill. Technology is also a major evolution that is now a vital role in the health care system. It allows patients to become more involved with their healthcare. They can follow up on test results, make appointments, and contact their doctors with the progression of technology. Not only has technology evolved but medication is another area that has improved the lives of many, back a hundred years ago the various medication was not available. The future has so much in store for those in the health care field. There are many interesting areas of the health care field. The one thing that interests me most is how disease treatment has changed the path to healing. The idea of medicine has change the look on life of healing and living. Medicine has change the ways we care for our customer know as our patient. In the earlier centuries, epidemics like cholera and smallpox were a widespread across countries; now those diseases are rarely heard of. With the research and implementation of new medicines most of the diseases that were killing thousands of people are now nonexistent. Nurses are the care takers in the health care field. With nurses patients receive one on one care, in many areas of the health care field. Nursing comes from the heart and spirit and truly from within. Healthcare was my number one choice field to work in. After working in a nursing home for many years showed me the reward for caring for others. I have learned many lessons in the healthcare field both positive and negative. . The people of Mexico do not need a complete government renovation like Iraq did. They just need someone to bluntly tell them that this way isnt working. Just helping industries is not the answer. A recent study by the Creighton University Center for Marriage and Family concludes that the biggest obstacle in the marriage life is the time, sex and money. The study found that debt brought into marriage, the couples' financial situation, balancing job and family, and frequency of sexual relations were of greatest concern to those ages 29 and under. The female or male may have their freedom from the marriage but the biggest impact will be on the children of the couple. Each year over 1 million children suffer the divorce of their parents. Those children who witnessed the divorce of their parent before they turn 18 usually carry the effect up to their adulthood and even affect the future generation. Almost 50 percent of the parents with children that are going through a divorce move into poverty after the divorce. That principle is that marriage is the best environment in which to raise healthy, happy children who can achieve their potential and that the family is the most important institution for social well being.
