There are no other works that best exemplify that power of words and ideas have had on my life and my outlook on it. C.S. Lewis himself was a big fan of Plato; his works were the key that allowed me to decipher the meaning encoded in the Plato that I had read. The Last Battle was the spark that gave me hope, Plato’s Allegory of the Cave gave me strength, and Plato’s Republic is what gave me the intellectual confidence in the presence of the ideal and the universal. They were puzzles and fascinating in a way that other math wasn’t. Rowling’s Harry Potter series was published, I was in third grade. My family bought three copies so my mom, my dad and I could all read it immediately. Rowling’s stories about a boy growing up, having misadventures and facing his destiny enraptured me, but the real witchcraft was in her words. Reading Jane Eyre gave me a vocabulary with which to contemplate my own principles. I find it useful to see my own traits and philosophies in a character, where I can examine them with greater clarity than if I were peering directly into my own mind. I finished re-reading the book in late December and the experience was well timed. This gives me hope that every individual holds ultimate power over her or his own life. They can decide if it is most meaningful to live with dignity, or with kindness, or with passion. I once heard art defined as anything that makes its audience feel and react. I like this definition, so I’ll posit that any art that causes a person to feel, greatly, is great. So I’ll make Jane Eyre my great book, as it has caused me to feel greatly solaced. In a well-written book, life-altering challenges and mundane activities alike are transfigured into something of consequence, as if they are part of a grand, unperceivable pattern. I dove into Aristotle and Thucydides while my dog investigated the nearby smells. Every evening, I ticked off the days on the calendar, counting down to the day I would fly from Michigan to Santa Fe. As a result, my grades suffered and I’ve spent most of my time in math class frustrated, confused, and upset. My teachers, although they tried, were unable to explain things to me and I, to be fair, was not great at listening to their explanations. The only time I loved math was sophomore year when we did proofs. Where, as the characters describe, the world was exactly the same as Narnia…but Truer. It was a simple interpretation of heaven, but it struck me. His ability to so perfectly enunciate why we must never lose hope, and always struggle towards the ideal. I, all artists, and those seeking some sort of universal truth, must try to achieve that purest, most visceral understanding. That idea, presented in Plato’s work, had not yet become clear to me, until I finished reading The Last Battle. It was as if the world finally came to terms with your mind. Like waking up from a dream to realize a truer, better world, the Narnians were led to the truest and most awoken state. It is a simple parable that reminds of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, where one man emerges from a lifetime of staring at shadows dancing on a cave wall to a real and vibrant and three-dimensional world. I had read Plato’s Republic, his Allegory of the Cave, and various dialogues in my sophomore year; I was surprisingly only finishing the Narnia series in my junior year. The end of the book, and thus the Narnia series, is death. Just death, of everyone and everything, as Aslan, the Jesus-like lion and creator of Narnia, leads the dead spirits of all Narnians, including most of the main characters, to…Narnia. But all of the sympathetic characters are fulfilled and have appeared to live their lives with intention, so their ends are far from tragic. I am tempted to write about a more important book, something a little weightier and more historic, but I feel it would be most appropriate to write about Jane Eyre. It’s a book that’s exceptionally significant to me because it has been an exceptional source of comfort.

How to Use Hoard The term hoard is derived from the Old English word hord, dated to the 10th century, which is found in the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf. In the poem, Beowulf is an old man when he hears that a dragon who has a room heaped high with treasure has been angered by a slave who stole a jeweled cup from his hoard. Dramatic Device Essay Things could really improve if only people were to become more socially responsible for the welfare of others as J.B Priestley once said. Throughout Priestleys life he was fascinated by the idea of time and uses this as a ground to base his stories upon. For many years, Priestley studied Ouspenskys theory; the belief that when we die, we re-enter our life again from the beginning, unless we learn from our mistakes. Priestley also studied Dunnes theory; the idea that you could be given the gift of seeing forward in time, as well as looking back so you can change your mistakes and avoid the consequences. These views and theories on time and society led Priestley to write a play, called An Inspector Calls. An Inspector Calls is a well-made play that attacks the social morels of his time. The play is set in 1912, but written in 1947, just two years after the Second World War. Edwardian society in 1912 was strictly divided into social class. J.B Priestley wrote the play for a middle class audience whilst highlighting the hypocrisy of the upper class. He intended to show us that we have collective responsibility for others and do not live in isolation. Within An Inspector Calls, Priestley embraces conflicting views and attitudes during the early 20th Century, concerning the social hierarchy and arrogance of the upper class. Priestleys clever use of time sometimes makes it seem as if events have not yet happened and the characters might have a chance to change their actions, the Second World War reflects this-people have a second chance to change and improve things. One way in which Priestley uses time as a dramatic device is by setting the play in 1912, long before either of the world wars, but performing it in 1947. This device leaves the audience with the advantage of looking back. We see this when Mr Birling describes the Titanic as absolutely unsinkable, this quote highlights Mr Birlings foolishness, as the audience know that the Titanic sunk on its maiden voyage. This device creates dramatic irony between the audience and Mr Birling. Priestley has given a good description of upper middle class men in the very first act of the play, making sure the audience can relate to Mr Birling as representing the average middle class man. Mr Birlings stupidity is further displayed when he states, there isnt a chance of war. This accentuates further dramatic irony, considering that the audience from 1947 have the wisdom of hindsight and can see that 1914 and 1939 brought two wars. The audience thus humiliates Mr Birling, as he portrays himself as a hard-headed business man but is only proven wrong. Priestley next challenges Mr Birlings belief in individualism. The audience discover these views when Mr Birling expresses to Gerald that, a man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own. The inspectors arrival cuts Mr Birlings speech short.  Placing the inspectors arrival here is a dramatic device, which challenges Mr Birlings view on society. As the play proceeds, the audience appreciate the important timing of the inspectors arrival and creates dramatic irony. This is due to the inspector teaching Gerald Croft and the Birlings that we have collective responsibility for everyone- a contradictory view to Mr Birlings.  Priestley uses time as a device to expose the hypocrisy of the upper classes in Edwardian Britain. Up until Mrs Birlings confession, the inspector relates the events leading up to Evas death in chronological order.
